The former Secretary General of United Nations Kofi Annan once expressed his view about the Organization he was serving as; “More than ever before in human history, we share a common destiny. We can master it only if we face it together. And that is why we have the United Nations.”

This statement defines the aim and objective of the UN reasonably. The organization has achieved many honors in terms of the awards bestowed to its various officers including the Secretary Generals. World has recognized the UN efforts of peace keeping among various states of the world. The aid to the developing countries for improvement of their economies and development in education sector has been among the prominent goals achieved by the UN. Evaluating the first 50 years of the UN's history, the author Stanley Meisler writes that "the United Nations never fulfilled the hopes of its founders, but it accomplished a great deal nevertheless, citing its role in decolonization and its many successful peacekeeping efforts.”

The institution that was established after the World War-2 to prevent any such misadventures in the future has been able to do it so till now but if we compare the number of casualties of the World War-2 that was 60 million and the number of people who died in various wars from different regions of the world from 1945-2000 which are roughly 51 million then we can see an ample difference along with raising an objection that UN has not been successful in attaining its goal. A war is the destruction of lives and properties in fact of nations; today we have a world where UN is present and still the loss of lives, properties and destruction of states in one or the other form is part of it. UN though has made magnificent achievement in the fields of Humanitarian aid but on the other hand it has failed to hold the hands of those who bomb humanity. On the one hand UN passes the resolution of NATO intervention in a state and on the other hand it builds refugee camps there. Analysts believe that UN in its entire period of existence has proved to be nothing else but a ‘Social Worker’.
